Podcasting: An Emerging Phenomenon

back in June 26th, in the opening post of this blog i wrote:

*Podcasts-Ive just brought a good Microphone, maybe ill use it to record some mini podcast shows :)

Since then, my interest in Podcasting just grew…here’s a comprehensive article about the next thing on the net, podcasting!

In this article you’ll find out:

  • What is a podcast?
  • How to subscribe to a podcast show?
  • Why is it so popular?
  • How to make your own podcast :P
  • Introduction- So what is a podcast anyway? maybe the simplest answer is that a podcast is an internet radio broadcast that you can download and listen to either on your PC/Mac or via an MP3 Player. A person uploads his “show” to the web, and then you download using a special program, listen to it on your PC or just transfer it to your MP3 and listen there :)

How to subscribe/download a Podcast show- Podcast authors today prefer to use the XML/RSS way when it comes to downloading their show, which means you’ll have to subscribe to the show in order to listen, subscription can be done easily with a podcasting aggregator such as Doppler.

it’s easier and recommended to use a program, since it checks automatically for any new podcasts, however, you can still download a podcast without subscribing in most cases.

So let’s put the steps in order:

      Get A Podcast Aggregator
Find The RSS Feed Of The Podcast-

In most cases when you click on a podcast subscription link you’ll get a message like this with a text saying “This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.”…Don’t get fuzzy!! hehe, you don’t have to deal with this code, all you have to do is to copy the URL location to your Podcast Aggregator and it’ll know what to do with it :)

Listen to it!- Either on your PC, or via your MP3 Player ;)

The Success Of Podcasting- Free, Universal & Simple…you can’t really describe it otherwise, when guys like Stephen Glicker & Leo Laporte (Tech T.V & G4) decide to use this method, you can’t say it isn’t worth trying, These guys are Pro’s, they know how to do this stuff, they’ve got the content, and they’re willing to share it for free, which is very attractive to the average listener..

Can I have one, too?- Assuming that you already have good content to talk about,a decent microphone, and minimal exprience with talking without anyone responding, I’ll present the basic things to have when creating your own Podcast show ;)

    Essential Elements:

      A decent microphone
      Audio Editting Program (Recommendation: Audacity)
Host- You’ll need a host to your podcasts, and you’ll need a good one if you’re really investing in it in terms of quality and content, cause the more audience you’ll have, the more bandwidth you’ll use, and Podcasts take alot of bandwidth my friend :D

For those of you who like this and would like to find some good podcasts about various issues, i’ll post some links on the forums later :)

Feel free to ask questions in the comments section ;)
    Have a nice day

You do know you don’t need a podcast reader anymore if you have the new firefox or the new ie 7? Who needs to download extra things when the browser does it for automatically. It’s a very nice feature. It checks every day for new casts. But if you want to use a program why not recommend itunes 5 since it has vid casts as well not just text. Podcasts are mainly mp3’s or “sound” bytes within the rss.
Aggregator is just a reader mainly for tex but does support autio but onlly mp3 not the newer rm, mp4, h264. Or the new bt ways of feeds.

Not all people have IE 7 or firefox, Doppler is very stable and “light”, iTunes is pretty “heavy” on the PC.

Thanks for the notes Joey :)

Hmm, it’s nice to see a new reader, may i ask how did you get to my blog?
